Hello,

Here is a quick response on my opinion of this person being fired over a comment he made about not shooting people you disagree with.

My initial reaction was very surprised especially since he was saying it is wrong to shoot people you disagree with. I have heard of many different cases with people being fired for what they have posted on social media. From all different jobs this is something that has impacted so many people’s lives.

Essentially the employer fired the individual over his views and post on a social media outlet about his thoughts on a public issue.

The firing was legal because he did not work for a government agency which has the freedom of speech protection and in the private sector they were in their rights to fire at will if they deemed his behavior not conducive to their policies.

Digital footprint as far as I know is when you have essentially a footprint from the start of you going on the computer and where if one wanted to they can find information about you via your digital footprint essentially your history on the web.

I do not believe that anything on the web and or using the web is ever truly private if a savvy tech person or hacker wanted to they can find what they want if you  have history to find.

I do not think the man felt that his comments he made on Facebook would have the reaction it did from his employer. I don’t think the comment he made to not shoot people you disagree with was a bad or outlandish comment, so I would have said for him to post it.

Here is an example of three firefighters and a paramedic choosing to voice their thoughts on protesters and the inconvenience it may cause. This is what they said and even a senior firefighter chimed in and expressed some thoughts.

I was actually very surprised to hear that people you think would and should be held to higher standards such as firefighters and paramedics would conduct themselves in this manner. I would think that these individuals in particular would actually want to save lives and not promote hurting individuals.

It seems pretty obvious that these individuals were fired due to the language and intent in their posts and that not just one but four individuals were a part of this dialogue with full support from all.

According to this video, South Carolina is a "fire at will" state which private sector employment is and apparently the fire department was not a government agency, so they had the ability to fire these individuals. I haven’t found concise accurate information on which fire departments are and are not part of a government agency.
